Calculator Methodology
Octa Calculator publishes transparent planning tools. This page explains how we document the math, assumptions, data, and limits behind a calculation so you can decide whether a result is suitable for your situation.

What a calculator result represents
A calculator applies a stated method to the values entered on the page. It can make arithmetic and comparisons easier, but it cannot know every condition that affects a real project, financial product, health decision, or transaction. Treat each result as an estimate unless the page explicitly says otherwise.
What we document on calculator pages
As calculators are reviewed and improved, their pages receive a method section that may include the items below. Older pages are being brought up to the same standard one at a time; we do not add a source or a review label until it can be supported.
- Formula: the mathematical relationship or calculation sequence used by the tool.
- Inputs and units: what the tool asks for, the unit conversions applied, and how rounding affects the displayed result.
- Assumptions and defaults: editable planning values such as waste allowance, density, rate, term, or frequency that can change a real-world result.
- Source notes: direct links to the specific external material used for a factual input, product specification, standard, or data table.
- Limits: the decisions the tool cannot make for a visitor, including local rules, supplier terms, fees, code requirements, and professional judgment.
How we select source material
We prefer primary or first-party material when it is available: official government publications, standards bodies, original data providers, manufacturers' technical documents, and the issuing organization for a rate, table, or rule. A link is added only when it supports the nearby claim or assumption; a long list of unrelated links is not evidence.
External links are provided as reference material, not as an endorsement or partnership. Source material can change, be withdrawn, or apply only to a particular region, product, or date. For a decision with meaningful cost, safety, legal, health, or financial consequences, verify the current source directly.
Data that changes over time
Some tools rely on values that can change, such as exchange rates, tax rules, product specifications, or benchmark tables. Where a page uses such data, we aim to identify its source and update date or version. Currency conversions use a dated USD-base rate snapshot from the provider identified on the Currency Converter; non-USD pairs are calculated from that snapshot. They are reference rates, not a bank, card, remittance, or dealer quote.
Checks before a change is published
We compare changed formulas and data rules against expected cases, check units and rounding, and inspect the public output of affected pages before release. These checks reduce mistakes but do not make a result a professional certification, a guarantee, or a substitute for independent verification.
What “updated” and “reviewed” mean here
“Updated” means page content, data, or calculator logic changed. It does not by itself mean a named human specialist reviewed the page. Octa Calculator does not currently publish named reviewer profiles or claim professional credentials it cannot verify. Until real, consented reviewer information and a tracked review process are available, the site is published under organization-level editorial ownership.
Limits and reporting a problem
Read the full disclaimer before relying on a result. If a formula, source, result, or explanation appears wrong or unclear, use the Report an issue button on the relevant calculator page or follow our Corrections Policy.
