The total flooring material you need depends on your room size, installation pattern, and material type. Estimating is more than just measuring a room's width and length; it requires accounting for waste. In standard carpentry, planks must be cut when reaching walls, and the cutoff ends are often unusable. Professional builders recommend purchasing an extra 8% to 15% of flooring material depending on the complexity of the laying layout.

Solid hardwood flooring provides high property valuation and premium aesthetics. Planks typically come in standard widths ranging from 2.25 inches to 5 inches. Hardwood requires acclimation in the destination room for 48 to 72 hours before installation. Laminate flooring is a durable, cost-effective synthetic product made from wood waste material compressed under heat. Laminate planks are wider (usually 7 to 8 inches) and clip together easily. When installing laminate, it is crucial to allow an expansion gap of 3/8" (10mm) along all walls. This space prevents buckling when humidity and temperature fluctuate.

Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) is waterproof, resilient, and popular for kitchens, bathrooms, and basements. LVP planks are standard 48 inches long by 6 to 9 inches wide. Joint stagger is critical for structural stability; ensure each row is staggered from its neighbor by at least 8 inches.

Engineered wood flooring combines a thin slice of hardwood veneer bonded over a stable plywood core. It offers the beauty of solid wood with improved resistance to expansion and moisture. Selecting different design patterns affects the required waste factor:

• Straight Lay (Grid / Parallel): 5% to 10% waste (8% standard). Boards run parallel to walls. Very easy cuts.
• Random Stagger: 5% to 10% waste (8% standard). Planks are offset, resulting in minimal end scrap.
• Diagonal Pattern (45°): 10% to 15% waste (12% standard). Triangle cuts are required at every wall boundary.
• Herringbone Layout: 15% to 20% waste (18% standard). Planks are installed perpendicularly, generating significant diagonal scrap.
• Chevron Layout: 15% to 20% waste (18% standard). Plank ends must be cut at exact angles to form V-shapes.
