Tip Calculator: How Much Should I Tip?
This tip calculator finds the tip amount and total bill at any percentage, splits everything evenly across a group, and works in reverse when you want the total to land on a clean number. Enter the bill, tap a percentage, and the tip, total, and per-person share appear instantly. In the United States, 18 to 20% is the standard restaurant tip for good service, with 15% as a floor and 25% for exceptional service.
Example: On an $85 dinner bill, a 20% tip is $17, making the total $102, or $34 per person split three ways.
How to Calculate a Tip Without a Calculator
The quick mental method: take 10% by moving the decimal one place left, then scale. For 20%, double the 10% figure. For 15%, add half of the 10% figure to itself. On a $64 bill, 10% is $6.40, so 20% is $12.80 and 15% is about $9.60. The calculator does this instantly, but knowing the shortcut means never being stuck when the phone is dead.
Tip Split Calculator: Dividing the Bill Between People
The split bill calculator divides the bill, tip, and total across any number of people and shows the per-person amount as the headline figure. Uneven cents round up per person rather than down, so the pooled cash always covers the bill and the tiny difference lands as extra tip instead of a short payment.
Example: A $127.40 bill with 20% tip split among 5 people comes to $30.58 each, rounded to $30.60 for clean cash handling.
Should You Tip on Tax or the Pre-Tax Amount?
Traditional etiquette bases the tip on the pre-tax subtotal, since the tip rewards service and the tax is not part of it. In practice the difference is small: on a $100 subtotal with 9% tax, tipping 20% pre-tax versus post-tax is $20 versus $21.80. The pre-tax toggle shows both figures so the choice is informed rather than accidental.
Reverse Tip Calculator: What Percent Did I Tip?
Reverse mode takes the bill and the total paid and returns the tip percentage. It answers the morning-after question of whether last night's tip was fair, and it lets servers and delivery drivers verify the percentage a customer left from the receipt totals.
