How the Lumber Calculator works

These notes describe the calculation used on this page and the assumptions that can change a real-world result.

Nominal board-foot, linear-foot, and whole-piece arithmetic Board feet per piece = nominal thickness (in) x nominal width (in) x length (ft) / 12. Board-foot and linear-foot totals are multiplied by (1 + entered waste); board-foot/cost-mode piece count is rounded up after that allowance.

Assumptions on this page

  • Board Foot and Cost modes use the nominal thickness and width entered into the formula. The page's displayed actual-size lookup is a reference only and does not change the board-foot result.
  • Framing mode uses a simplified count: ceil(wall length in / entered spacing) + 1, plus 3 studs per entered corner and 2 per entered opening, then applies the entered waste percentage. It does not lay out a wall or identify required framing at actual openings, corners, intersections, connections, or braced-wall locations.
  • Deck Board mode uses the page's listed actual board width plus the selected gap to count board runs across the entered deck width. It assumes each run uses the entered deck length and only applies the entered waste percentage; it does not create a cut plan, joint layout, border pattern, fastening plan, or structural deck design.
  • Custom List mode applies the entered waste percentage to board-foot and linear-foot totals. Its optional cost is the sum of entered row quantities x entered per-piece prices and is not automatically increased for the allowance.
  • Any optional cost result is arithmetic from the user's price input or convenience value. It is not a supplier quote and does not include unentered taxes, delivery, grading, treatment, hardware, waste handling, labour, or availability.
  • This is a quantity and cut-list aid, not structural, span, member-grade, connection, fastening, code, permit, or safety guidance.

Worked calculator example: fifty nominal 2 by 4 by 10 ft pieces

Choose Board Foot Calculator and enter nominal thickness 2 in, nominal width 4 in, length 10 ft, 50 pieces, and a 10% allowance. If the entered price is 0.85 per board foot, the calculator follows this exact sequence:

  1. Board feet per piece: 2 × 4 × 10 ÷ 12 = 6.6667 board feet.
  2. Raw board footage: 6.6667 × 50 = 333.3333 board feet.
  3. Adjusted board footage: 333.3333 × 1.10 = 366.6667 board feet.
  4. Adjusted linear feet: 10 × 50 × 1.10 = 550 linear feet.
  5. Whole pieces: ceil(50 × 1.10) = 55 pieces.
  6. Optional cost: 366.6667 × 0.85 = 311.67 in the selected currency before any unentered supplier terms.

That is a reproducible quantity check, not an instruction to buy fifty-five boards. A different stock length can change cuts and offcuts, and an actual quote can include a different grade, treatment, bundle quantity, delivery fee, or price.

Three different ways to describe lumber

A material list often mixes three useful but different quantities: board feet describe a nominal wood volume, linear feet describe total length, and pieces describe countable stock. This calculator shows all three so a cut list can be checked from more than one angle. They should not be treated as interchangeable without the dimensions and stock lengths that connect them.

Board Foot and Cost modes use the nominal width and thickness in the formula. The page also displays an actual-size lookup for common dimensional lumber, but that lookup does not change the calculation. For example, the tool treats a nominal 2 by 4 as 2 in by 4 in when calculating board feet, while its reference text displays 1.5 in by 3.5 in as a typical milled size. Confirm the actual product label at the supplier, especially for surfaced, treated, engineered, imported, or specialty products.

The USDA Forest Products Laboratory's commercial-lumber reference is useful context: lumber sizes, grades, and availability are product and market facts, not values a quantity calculator can decide.

The board-foot formula this tool uses

For Board Foot and Cost modes, the calculation is explicit:

Board feet per piece = nominal thickness (in) × nominal width (in) × length (ft) ÷ 12

Raw board feet = board feet per piece × piece count

Adjusted board feet = raw board feet × (1 + entered waste percentage)

Adjusted linear feet = length (ft) × piece count × (1 + entered waste percentage)

The denominator of 12 comes from the traditional board-foot unit: one inch by twelve inches by one foot. NIST's unit tables support the inch, foot, and volume relationships used in that arithmetic. The formula is a quantity convention, not a statement of structural capacity or a substitute for a supplier's grade and product information.

What the Framing Lumber mode does and does not count

The Framing Lumber mode is deliberately simpler than a wall layout. It calculates base positions as ceil(wall length in inches ÷ spacing) + 1, adds three studs for each corner you enter and two studs for each opening you enter, then applies the allowance. It uses the stock stud length and nominal size you select to derive linear feet and board feet.

This is a preliminary stock-count model only. It does not know the actual position, width, height, or framing arrangement of an opening; it does not separate king, jack, cripple, trimmer, backing, blocking, braced-wall, or connection requirements; and it cannot decide whether 16 in or 24 in on-center spacing, a 2 by 4 or 2 by 6, or any framing configuration is appropriate. Use the more detailed Stud Calculator only after a wall design has been selected, and verify the final design under the locally adopted rules and project documents.

Deck Board mode: coverage math, not a deck design

Deck Board mode first takes the listed actual width for the chosen board and adds the entered gap. It divides deck width in inches by that effective width and rounds up to whole board runs. It then multiplies runs by the entered board-run length, applies the allowance, and rounds up to the selected stock length.

Effective width = listed actual board width + entered gap

Runs = ceil(deck width in inches ÷ effective width)

Linear feet = runs × board-run length × (1 + entered waste)

Stock pieces = ceil(adjusted linear feet ÷ selected stock length)

For the page's 20 ft by 12 ft example with 5/4 by 6 boards, 1/8 in gap, 12 ft stock, and 10% allowance, the tool uses a 5.5 in actual width plus 0.125 in gap = 5.625 in. It calculates 26 runs, 520 raw linear feet, 572 adjusted linear feet, and 48 stock boards. It does not create a board-joint plan, account for a picture frame, decide fastener spacing, or evaluate joists, beams, footings, rails, or connections.

Use the allowance as a visible cut-list decision

An allowance is not a repair for an undefined material list. First write the raw list: member or board type, nominal size, actual product if known, finish length, stock length, count, and where offcuts can be reused. Then decide whether extra material is justified by end cuts, non-reusable offcuts, defects, selected stock lengths, matching, pattern work, or a future repair piece. Record that reason next to the percentage.

The Custom Cut List mode is useful for a mixed tally, but read its cost output carefully. The page sums the price entered for each raw row; it applies the allowance to displayed board feet and linear feet, not automatically to the custom-row cost. Add the cost of extra stock deliberately after you decide what extra pieces will actually be purchased.

Use a current supplier quote for the final check. Price per board foot, per linear foot, and per piece are different units, and a price total cannot see tax, delivery, handling, treatment, hardware, or labour unless those values are separately recorded.

Where quantity math stops

This calculator cannot choose a species, grade, member size, span, connection, fastener, treatment, fire or decay rating, decking product, framing layout, or safe cutting and installation method. The 2024 IRC's wall-framing provisions, where adopted, show why those decisions depend on much more than a count: wall height, load, bracing, openings, connections, and local conditions matter. The applicable code may be a different edition or locally amended, and it is not automatically the right standard for every project or location.

Before ordering, compare the output against the approved list and supplier product data. If a total looks high or low, check nominal versus actual dimensions, stock length, unit price, allowance, board direction, and whether a structural member was accidentally treated as finish lumber. You can also report a calculator issue or unclear result so the site team can review it.

How does this calculator calculate board feet?
It multiplies nominal thickness in inches by nominal width in inches by length in feet, then divides by 12. It multiplies the raw result by the entered waste percentage for the displayed adjusted board-foot total.
Why does the page show both nominal and actual lumber dimensions?
The board-foot formula uses the nominal size entered in the calculator. The actual-size text is a reference lookup for common milled lumber and does not change the calculation. Confirm the actual dimensions of the product you will buy with the supplier.
Does the Framing Lumber mode design a wall or choose stud spacing?
No. It is a simplified quantity model that counts base positions plus fixed extras for entered corners and openings. It does not lay out actual openings, bracing, headers, connections, loads, or code requirements, and it cannot choose a framing system.
How does Deck Board mode count boards?

How should I choose a waste allowance?
Calculate the raw cut list first, then document why extra stock is needed for the actual layout, stock lengths, defects, non-reusable offcuts, pattern work, or repairs. The calculator does not recommend one percentage for every project.
Can I use this page to select joists, beams, headers, or spans?
No. Those are structural decisions that require the project loads, member grade and species, span, supports, connections, local requirements, and sometimes engineering. A material quantity does not prove a member is suitable.
